The Red Gold Tomatoes Challenge!

This week I took the Red Gold Tomatoes challenge! Have you ever wondered how similar products from different companies compare or contrasts? The best way to to take a few of the items in question and stack them up for a side by side comparison. That is exactly what I did when I accepted the Red Gold Tomatoes challenge!

You may remember that late last year I visited with my friends at Red Gold again and this time I was with a HUGE group of influencers from around the country. I have had the fortunate opportunity to visit the different Red Gold tomato processing facilities in the past and through that I have learned quite a bit about the work that goes in to 1 perfect can of summer fresh tomatoes. This time I got to see all of this through the eyes of first time visitors- which I loved! The guests were made to feel at home like I knew they would be and I think that each left with a new appreciation for this multi-generational family run business.

Red Gold is in fact a family owned and operated business with deep roots in Indiana. Not only that Red Gold Tomatoes are grown by family farmers all across the state, many of which I have had the chance to meet. Each takes a special pride in the privilege of growing something that feeds families and passing this on to future generations of farmers. Learn all about their family of farmers HERE.

So when I was asked to take the Red Gold Tomatoes challenge and share the results with you all- of course I said yes. It’s not often that you can see 2 of the same type of product side by side for comparison. Trust me when I say that straight from the can there was a clear winner here. See for yourself!

Take the Red Gold Tomatoes challenge!

What you need:

1 28 oz can of Red Gold whole peeled tomatoes

1 28 oz can of another brand- I used Hunts whole peeled tomatoes

A can opener, knife and spoon

2 shallow dishes, preferably white so you can really see the difference in the juice or “media” as it is referred to

1.Open the can of Red Gold Tomatoes and carefully pour into the dish. Repeat the same thing with the Hunts. Place the 2 trays side by side to compare. Rate on a 1-5 scale.

2.  Examine the tomatoes and compare the appearance on a 1-5 scale. Rate the product on red color of tomatoes, uniformity of size and tomato integrity (are they still whole?). Rate on a 1-5 scale.

 

3. Move the tomatoes to the top of the tray and all ow the media, or juices, to move towards the front. Examine if the tomatoes are broken, yellow on the shoulders, or pieces of peel still attached. Rate on a 1-5 scale.

 

4. Using a knife, slice 1 tomatoes from each tray in half to inspect the inside. Are they visually different? Taste each one to determine the quality and intensity flavor. Rate on a 1-5 scale.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

5. Taste the media (juice)- does it taste good enough to drink? Is the color vibrant and fresh looking or thin and watery? Rate on a 1-5 scale

 

Now take a moment to see which brand has the higher score here by totaling up your rates. I am pretty sure I know your answer. I am sure you know mine.

I scored Red Gold Tomatoes 5’s across the board and even though I have tasted all of their products numerous times, I tasted these whole tomatoes again while tasting the Hunts to be sure my opinion had not changed. I scored Hunts at a 2-3 for most categories.
