Healthy Wraps for the Whole Family…
In my bi-weekly cooking segment on Fox59 Indianapolis: Eating Around Indy, I made 3 healthy wraps. Not just some lunch meat or pb&j either. I thought of 3 combinations that are packable, accessible, healthy, tasty and easy enough for my kids to make. With 2 boys that are edging closer to complete independence, I am bolstering their kitchen knowledge as much as I can.
Jim O’Brien and I quickly assembled these 3 healthy wraps in the time it would take to hit the drive through or throw pre-packaged foods in a lunch box. Best of all? When you buy the ingredients for these you will have enough to make this for a family of 4-twice!

And if you are like me- you are just plain old TIRED of eating the same old thing! When I want a sandwich I don’t want to have to navigate through thick bread that does not lend to the flavor of the meal that I am eating. Enter in the gluten-free and flavor packed tortillas made by Toufayan Bakeries . For these recipes I used spinach, garden vegetable and original. Not only do they have a large surface area but they also do not rip and tear when you roll them! That sold me right there. I could tell you more but you should visit their website for more information and how you can find them in your area.
Like all of my recipes I share with you all- make these your own. Don’t like the berries I chose? Use something else. Have a peanut allergy in your house? Use almond or cashew butter. What I love about wraps are that they are a blank canvas and you are only limited by your creativity!
Adding all of the filling to a bowl and mixing ‘tossed salad style’ ensured that the dressing and ingredients are completely blended together.
Ingredients
- 2 C diced cooked chicken
- 1 1/2 C berries of your choice ( I used blueberries and raspberries)
- 1/4 C sliced almonds
- 12-16 oz greens of your choice ( I use a blend of baby kale, chard and spinach)
- 4 oz of crumbled blue cheese (1 small container)
- 1/2 C of your favorite ‘Italian style’ dressing. Good options: Balsamic, vinegar and oil, Zesty Italian OR make your own!
- 4 large tortillas ( I used Toufayan Bakeries spinach gluten-free)
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a bowl.
- Evenly distribute ingredients on each tortilla surface.
- Wrap in the style of your choosing.
For this super, veggie-packed wrap I used original Sabra hummus. Feel free to use one of their other varieties and as a matter of fact roasted red pepper hummus is a great option here.
Ingredients
- 1 small container Sabra Hummus of your choice
- 1 C matchstick cut carrots
- 1 small cucumber- peeled, seeded and cut into stick or dice- reserve 1 C
- 1 small tomato- seeded and diced
- 2 C mixed greens
- 4 large tortillas ( I used Toufayan Bakeries garden veggie gluten-free)
Instructions
- Spread desired amount of hummus in the center of each wrap.
- Layer remaining ingredients on each one.
- Wrap in the style of your choosing.
Ingredients
- 1 C peanut butter (or other nut butter)
- 1 C vanilla yogurt
- honey
- 2 C granola of your choice
- 1 C fruit OR 1 large banana-sliced
- 4 large tortillas ( I used Toufayan Bakeries original gluten-free)
Instructions
- Lay out the tortillas.
- Layer on ingredients in an equal amount on each surface ending with a line of honey on each one. Wrap in the style of your choosing.
