Coney Dogs with Dr. Pepper BBQ Sauce

Have you heard that it’s National Coney Dog Day?!  I didn’t know there was such a day!  Well, throw your favorite hot dog, brat or veggie dog on the grill and top it with some Dr. Pepper BBQ Sauce. The recipe is below and you’re going to love it.

By the way, I also heard that it’s National Tequila Day… Now that’s my kind of holiday ????

The best part about this Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce is that it’s versatile and can be used in so many different ways.

Use it to glaze some baby back ribs, add it to a grilled chicken breast salad, or heck, be bold and make my grilled potato salad recipe and use some of this Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce instead of the lemon vinaigrette dressing.

Coney Dog with Dr. Pepper BBQ Sauce

This sweet sauce is perfect as a hot dog topping, a glaze for meats, or even as a dressing for potato or macaroni salad. Makes approximately 3 cups

Ingredients

  • 1/2 stick unsalted butter
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 12 ounces of Dr. Pepper
  • 1 C ketchup
  • 1/2 C packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 C cider vinegar
  • 1/3 C Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 Tb tomato paste
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp red pepper spice
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1 tsp coarse salt

Instructions

  1. Saute the onion and garlic in the butter in a tall sauce pan until tender, 10 minutes. Add all of the other ingredients and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes or until sauce has thickened.
  2. Remove from heat and allow to cool for 20 minutes.
  3. Using an immersion blender (or a regular blender) puree the sauce until smooth.
  4. Can be kept in refrigerator for one week.

    I don't eat hot dogs, but I am SO trying this sauce. Dr. Pepper is my guilty pleasure. :) And I love this because, for once, I actually have all the ingredients on hand.
