Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are a classic chewy cookie, perfect with a tall glass of milk. My son found a good book to read. Little did he know that inside the classic book was this classic oatmeal chocolate chip cookies recipe.
My son ran into the school building with an old tattered book in his hands, so excited he couldn’t contain himself. At first, I was flattered because I thought he was happy to see me.
Not quite…
It was because that day at school he had chosen an ‘easy book’ during library that he was so excited to show me. Explanation : Every once in a while, my kids will get a book that they can read in one sitting or in one day. I am not sure why they do this. They go from a heavy 950 page novel to a thin easy read. It may be like how I occasionally read fluff books before bed. Beach reads. Chick books.
But this particular book he chose at random was called Encyclopedia Brown and the Mystery of the Missing Cake by Donald Lobel. He was stoked because this book was not only a mystery, but it also was full of recipes! He had flagged a few for us to make, like oven french fries and chocolate brownies.
The recipes were easy and by the wording, I could tell they were old. So I could not tell him no when he was so excited. Batting his big brown eyes at me always works. He wanted to cook with me, so that’s what we did.
We settled on this easy oatmeal chocolate chip cookies recipe. I had all of the ingredients and he easily made these on his own, with very little supervision by me. His older brother even got in on the action, which I loved. It was the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon while my husband packed for his trip, as they needed something to get their mind off of the fact he will be gone for a very long time.
Looking for something that you can do with the little person in your life? This classic oatmeal chocolate chip cookies recipe is perfect.
Even better, get an Encyclopedia Brown book to surprise your budding reader with a ‘Text to World” connection. ????

- Using a small scoop, add dough balls to a greased cookie sheet (I use parchment).
- Bake for 8-12 minutes or until lightly brown and slightly firm.
Important Notes
Smaller dough balls call for smaller chocolate chips and a reduced baking time. We purposely made small cookies so we scaled the baking time back and used smaller chocolate chips.
Our oatmeal chocolate chip cookies turned out a bit crisp. If you like them softer, decrease bake time by about a minute. They make excellent ice cream sandwiches too!
