I recently made a few stops on the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail. Did you know that Indiana is actually a great place to grow wine grapes?

Last month I had the opportunity to learn more about the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail through an informal get-together at Butler Winery in Bloomington. The Indiana Uplands Wine Trail is comprised of 9 wineries in Central to Southern Indiana:
Each winery boasts a unique list of wines and one is not like the other. These 9 wineries work together to promote the industry and the excellent growing region that it is. The soil and climate in Central to Southern Indiana is ideal for growing grapes (learn more here)
The first vines in Indiana were planted in the 1840’s by the Huber Family in Starlight, Indiana thus setting the course for what would become the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail. (learn more here)

As trends and technology changes, so does the Indiana wine industry. More people are trying to make the connection between what they eat and drink and where it comes from and winery tours are more popular than ever. Most wineries offer live music, classes, seminars and educational opportunities in addition to small plates, food events and even- distilled spirits! That’s right- a few of the wineries on the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail also make distilled spirits. Did you know that one of the Indiana Upland wineries uses solar power?
- Indiana wineries make wine from sweet to dry with many kinds in between!
- Visit a tasting room to see what you like- then take home a bottle!
- Drink what you like no matter what food you think you need to pair it with! BUT- wine is always perfect with cheese!
- Every year I give a different wine from a different Indiana winery during the holidays. Last year this was my gift wine of choice!
- I added to my “collection” that day.
- Birds, weeds, deer- you name it, the winemakers have to protect the grapes from it!

Next time you have a little time, visit the Indiana Uplands Wine Trail website to download the trail map and passport. Pack a basket of food and water and set a course. There is so much diversity in the wines not to mention a beautiful landscape, you are sure to find a favorite!
