Greek Style Pork Burgers: How do YOU dress your burgers? Find out my favorite topping and how you can get your hands on these Indiana Pork patties!

Greek Style Pork Burgers are a great combination of a hearty burger and one of my favorites: a gyro. With a cool, creamy Tzatziki sauce, crisp cucumber slices, leafy spinach and juicy tomatoes- this is not only a complete meal but a healthy one to boot!

Do you remember last summer when I shared on IndyStyle that the Indiana Pork burger was one of my favorite Indiana State Fair foods?

Just listen to them sizzle! Makes me think of summer, how about you?


Starting Memorial Day weekend, you can taste the Indiana Pork patty for yourself! The patty that the Indiana State Fair made famous will be available exclusively at Marsh Supermarkets as part of the Indiana Grown program. Indiana Grown is an initiative through the Indiana State Department of Agriculture to promote and market foods and products grown and packaged in Indiana. Indiana Packers, one of Indiana’s largest hog processing facilities, uses 85% Indiana pork to make these flavorful patties.

You will find these patties in the frozen section of the meat department. They come conveniently packaged so you can make one or all of them easily on the grill or indoors. They will be available in packages of 8. Each 5.3 oz (or roughly 1/3 lb) patty has 30 grams of protein and 15 grams of fat (an 85/15 blend of pork). That’s a pretty healthy option for your backyard BBQ or weeknight meal!

Lemon zest, oregano and salt/pepper add just a bit of zip to these Greek Style Pork Burgers.

 

I think of pork and chicken as a sort of blank canvas. Both are very amenable to a variety of flavors, and today I am sharing one of my favorite burger recipes: Greek Style Pork Burgers. I start off with a dusting of kosher salt, fresh black pepper, dried oregano and lemon zest for the patties. I then grill to complete doneness with an internal temperature of 165 for healthy eating.

Food safety is important!

I then place the Greek style pork burgers on a nice bun that is big enough to handle this large patty, dress it with spinach, cucumbers and tomato. Lastly, I add a dollop of one of my favorite condiments: Tzatziki sauce!

 

How do you dress your pork burgers?

Here are a few other great ideas:

Spicy tomato compote

Bacon and onion jam

Bruscetta (tomato, basil, fresh mozzarella)

Mango, mint and white cheddar

Sharp cheddar, bacon and BBQ sauce

I had the opportunity to play around in the kitchen a few weeks ago and make some interesting toppings. My favorite was an apple cranberry coleslaw. We also had a corn lime pecan pesto to top our burger with. A pork burger can be a healthy option as long as you limit your toppings to those that give you a little something healthy in return and can be a great way to sneak in more veggies and even fruit! Who doesn’t love a little pineapple on a burger? Have you tried it?

Indoors or out- cook these pork burgers to an internal temp of 165 F.

Greek Style Pork Burgers

Ingredients

  • 8 frozen Indiana Pork patties
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • pinch kosher salt/fresh black pepper
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 2 4oz containers of plain Greek yogurt
  • 4 oz crumbled feta
  • 2 TB chopped fresh mint
  • pinch kosher salt/fresh black pepper
  • sliced tomato and cucumbers for garnish
  • baby spinach for garnish
  • buns of your choice

Instructions

  1. Lay each of the patties in a shallow dish.
  2. Sprinkle both sides with lemon juice, salt, pepper, zest and oregano.
  3. Meanwhile, add the yogurt, feta, mint, salt and pepper to a small bowl.
  4. Combine and set aside.
  5. Grill or cook patties indoors until a thermometer reads 165 degrees.
  6. Remove from heat, place on bun and dress with Tzatziki, tomatoes, cucumber and spinach.
