Family Time in the Kitchen Can Be FUN Too! #WeekNightKitchen

As a busy family of four, we spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Long talks over dinner, watching the morning news while making coffee, doing dishes after a long day at work. Solving puzzles, reading the newspaper and learning new recipes- so much happens in this well loved space in our home.

For me, as the one that does 90% of the cooking, I want to maximize my time when cooking for my family. I split my cooking into 2 categories: work I do for clients and my website and cooking for my family and I. Either way you slice it I am rarely just leisurely cooking with no schedule to follow, deadline to meet or place to be. I hate that our schedule is that hectic but most of the time it is.

I am in the long process of planning an updated kitchen layout. This will roll out over a long period of time, like all of our projects seem to do. I am getting ideas here and there but most of all I want to retain a few key things from what I love about our current setup. The space for us all to just ‘hang out’ and room to move so I can cook with my kids.

Many days, so I can keep them occupied and with me in the kitchen while I am finishing prep, I get out games to help pass the time. My husband and sons are lovers of all board games. Their current pre-dinner fave? Monopoly. It’s serious stuff!

Both kids, but my youngest specifically, like to cook. These moments, sometimes fun- sometimes not so much- are ones ingrained in every nick on the countertops and scratch on the stovetop. It is part of the fabric of our experiences and that is something I want to hang onto.

New on the scene will be space saving features, fast filling ice makers and water, super efficient (fast and quiet too) dishwasher and an oven that will feed a small army. This is the stage of life that I am in. I want to whip up the food my family loves- but not spend a million years in the kitchen.
