Basil Buttermilk Salad Dressing is a simple homemade salad dressing, packed with fresh garden basil. 

I woke up this morning with such a craving for Ranch dressing and carrots. Don’t laugh, it’s true. But not just any Ranch…. I wanted my basil buttermilk salad dressing!

This salad dressing recipe is so simple to make, it is something I almost always have on hand. After you have made your own salad dressing, it is hard to buy the bottled kind again. I can’t argue it’s convenience, but to me I prefer the few minutes it take to make it homemade.

The base of the basil buttermilk salad dressing is buttermilk, of course, but also sour cream. I use low fat, but any kind will work. Once you have that base to work with, the flavor combinations are endless. If you don’t have fresh basil on hand, you can add chives or tarragon, or really any fresh herbs. If you want to kick up the flavor of the dressing to a whole new level, you can add a teaspoon of dried taco seasoning or some finely chopped ancho chiles in adobo sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup low fat buttermilk
  • 1 cup low fat sour cream
  • 1/4 cup + 2 tbl freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 3 tbl fresh basil, minced
  • 1 tsp onion salt
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

Instructions

  1. In a bowl or large shaker container, combine buttermilk and sour cream. Add Parmesan, basil, onion salt, and garlic. I add a few cracks of fresh pepper at the end.
  2. Shake or stir to combine. Refrigerate for up to 4 days.
