On Saturday I will be joining thousands of others in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in downtown Indianapolis. I am excited to participate and I am happy to be completing this event with friends who are there with me as well as in spirit.
I wish I was there for other reasons, I wish I was there to just support the cause. It is so different for me to attend this event as someone who bears the scars and not just as a “participant”. I am not ashamed of them, rather, I wear them as a badge. This doesn’t define who I am but rather who I will be. I work every day to stay on this path.
I think I have mixed feelings because I will be surrounded by so many women who are true rock stars to me. Women who are there for their sister, remembering friends that have passed, honoring their lost mother or fighting for themselves.
I explained it to my husband like this: my experience was like a poppy seed. To me is was life altering but I am so lucky. There will be people there who have a watermelon. They are warriors. We are the same yet different.
SO with a humble heart and tears in my eyes I will cross the line. I will be thankful, hopeful and at peace. I’m sorry it took this life changing event to make me see. But it did…I see it everywhere.
Hope.
