Hello my name is Heather and I am a control-a-holic……
Yes, I admit that I prefer to be the only cook in the kitchen. I don’t know how or when it happened, but I have come to prefer it. I think it is because I have everything where/how I want it and it is just easier if I cook and clean it up. This may stem from years of being a SAHM and being alone all day with the kiddos. I really don’t even like to cook with someone helping. I guess I like to go it alone….
You know how some men retreat to the garage to disconnect and have some “me time”? Well, being in the kitchen is like that to me. Call it my Woman Cave. I like to be in there, elbow deep in a recipe. Making notes, taking pictures and thinking. About anything and everything. Now that’s not to say I don’t also enjoy having a good conversation with a friend or family member while whipping up dinner, I do love that. I just subscribe to the notion that we just need 1 cook in the kitchen ????
Yesterday was the last day of school until April 4th. Needless to say my brain was mush and I needed to be pampered a little. I went to a local winery after school and bought a nice bottle of red and headed home. I hinted to my husband that morning that I would love to be surprised with a dinner when I got home. He didn’t let me down.
The Husband has a few things that he is very good at making. One of them is Fajitas. There isn’t a recipe, per se. He will use whatever is in season and tailor it to what we feel like at the time. Sometimes they are very distinctly southwest and sometimes have an Asian flair. All I know is they are always good and he knew I would love them….and I did.
He marinated a flat iron steak for a few hours in Tamari, pineapple juice and red pepper flakes. He served the cooked sliced meat with a grilled red pepper and a sweet onion. Garnished with black beans, fresh salsa, cilantro and just a bit of sour cream. Happiness by the bite ????
