Peach-Stuffed Grilled Turkey Burgers with Fresh Blueberry-Peach Sauce

Sometimes I just crave a burger.  I know, I know…it’s not a popular thing to say in these days of e-coli contamination, but it’s true. To keep things healthier, I am a big fan of using ground turkey to make burgers, and if you are lucky enough to find someone who will grind fresh meat for you, then you can rest assured that your turkey burgers will be A-OK.

Recently, I purchased a pound of ground turkey from a local grocery chain, only to find out when I was home and ready to use it (the same day) that it was bad.  I don’t just mean it expired that day…I mean it was full on moldy on the backside and 1 week past its prime.  It was a good, reputable brand, too.  I think someone had set it in a shelf and someone put it back.  Not thinking to check it’s temperature…?  I don’t know.  It was beyond disgusting, so for that reason and many others, I went straight to my local butcher to buy a pound of freshly ground turkey. I actually watched them grind it. I felt better about it, heading straight home to make something that was ‘safe’ to eat.

Grilled Turkey Burgers with Blueberry-Peach Sauce – Inspired by an Appetizer

grilled turkey burgers, stuffed with fresh peaches

oops, sorry about the raw turkey shot!

I got the idea to make grilled turkey burgers by an appetizer I had recently. The appetizer was made with lamb, not turkey, but I didn’t want to push my luck by trying to sneak in lamb for dinner. ????  I made note of the flavors and that is exactly what I made, in the form of peach-stuffed grilled turkey burgers.  Sometimes I get dinner all wrong, but sometimes I have a culinary hit… the turkey burgers were a home run!

Then, when flipping through last months’ Better Homes and Gardens that my Mom gave me, I saw a similar recipe, using a blueberry-peach sauce.  I thought I might combine the 2, which is what I did, and it really worked!

sliced fresh peaches and fresh blueberries

The blueberry-peach sauce is so good! With the impressive flavor combination of the peaches and the blueberries, plus the addition of chili powder and other spices, it would even be good on grilled chicken or fish.

My kids really liked the turkey burgers, and of course my husband did. With the base of a nice slice of bread with a hint of garlic, greens dressed with a little oil, and the flavorful peach turkey burgers with the sauce ladled on top, this dinner encompasses many different textures and flavors into one dish!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound lean ground turkey
  • 5 ripe peaches, skin on, pitted and roughly chopped
  • a pinch of red pepper flakes (to taste)
  • 3/4 C fresh blueberries
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • a pinch of cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp of sugar, optional (helpful if your peaches aren’t very ripe)
  • Monterrey Jack cheese
  • coarse salt
  • freshly cracked black pepper
  • olive oil
  • buns or sliced baguettes
  • Garnishes:
  • fresh mint
  • Fresh arugula and spinach
  • 1 clove garlic to rub on toasted slices of bread (optional)

Instructions

  1. Chop 1 peach (with skin on) into small pieces and add to a small bowl. Add ground turkey, salt and pepper. Drizzle lightly with olive oil. Make 4 equal sized patties. Grill on a grill pan indoors, or on an outdoor grill.
  2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, add blueberries and the other 4 peaches that are rough chopped along with the chili powder, cumin, cinnamon and sugar and a little drizzle of olive oil.  Cook, stirring occasionally, until juicy.
  3. Slice the buns or baguette and briefly grill or broil the slices, until warm and slightly toasted. When bread is warm and toasted, rub a clove of garlic on the flat surface. It gives just a delicate taste with out overpowering the burger. Layer on the bread a heap of greens, a drizzle of olive oil (optional), the burger, then a spoon full of the sauce.

Wow! what an interesting burger variation! Looks delicious. Although, I must confess, I prefer the real ground over ground turkey =) Of course, everything is better on a baguette!! @alanecooke

Thanks Guys!! I really have to reduce my caloric intake so I gravitate towards turkey. A 'beefy' burger is great sometimes too :) This was a hit with my family, so I think your will like it too! Make sure to dice the peach for the burger small...that's the mistake I made. Chunks instead of small dice :/

I love the photos that accompany this recipe. If I only read the ingredients list, I may be a little suspect as to how good it might be BUT the photos make me wish I could make it for dinner tonight. Yummmm! Visiting from SITs.

This does look good. I wouldn't have thought of fruit IN the burger either. I'm careful about my meat as well and usually buy it from a farm that I trust.

I've never seen a burger like this...it is totally interesting. I think that both of my kids would like this a lot. They are huge fruit fans and not so big on regular burgers. This might be a burger they would eat!

I'm a big fan of sweet & savory so I could see this really working together nicely and also not be a "heavy" summer meal!
