This may seem strange, as biscuits with sausage gravy is a dish as old as time, but I have never been able to make an edible version of the gravy.
Too much meat!
Not enough meat!
or, “It tastes like flour” are but a few of the comments I have received over the years when I offered this up for breakfast.
I do enjoy a small dish of biscuits with sausage gravy every now and then. My personal favorite is from LePeep, an Indianapolis chain of restaurants. It takes the normal recipe out of the box and adds flavors to it. Flavors that far supersede the white, gluey and pasty version everyone has become so accustomed to at McDonald’s (or other chain fast-food breakfast joints). Now I know some of you are thinking that McD’s is fine, and it is. I just happen to not like it 🙂
My oldest son, Noah, is quite the B&G connoisseur. One of his favorite versions has a base of a biscuit, shredded potatoes, gravy, one scrambled egg and sharp cheddar and a neat little dollop of sour cream over the top. Can you imagine this leaning tower of gastro-intestinal distress like I can? Just thinking about it makes me twitch. Alas, he is a serious swimmer and eats like this before big meets only. But still….wow.
I always make a big breakfast on Sunday mornings. It is usually a true day off for us and the Boys really look forward to this meal. We spent the day yesterday going to several specialty grocery stores and along the way I picked up a nice roll of locally produced turkey sausage (Moody Meats). Not sure what part this meat would eventually play in the kitchen I stowed it away in the meat drawer.
As if he read my mind, Noah asked if I could make another pass at making biscuits with sausage gravy. I realized that I was being a baby by not trying to make it work, so I tied on my apron and got to work. I have to say I am pretty impressed. I had this on the table in 20 minutes and it was actually quite tasty. Simple but good.
I’d love for you to give this biscuits with sausage gravy recipe a try!
Oh, and if you want something delicious to serve it with, be sure to also check out my recipe for fruit salad.
Now, this is a really basic recipe. My family likes their biscuits with gravy a little spicy, so I use a little more crushed red pepper. This is easy and quick, and if i can do it then anyone can.
